Synopsis
Kumari Girls
"Kumari Girls" is a captivating documentary that explores the lives of Nepal's living goddesses. Selected as prepubescent girls to embody a deity, these Kumaris live in seclusion and reverence until puberty. While a Kumari, her feet are not permitted to touch the ground. The film follows three former Kumaris—Chanira, Preeti, and Matina—as they navigate the profound transition from divine beings to ordinary young women; revealing their struggles, triumphs, and the universal quest for identity and empowerment.

Nepal’s Kumari are the world’s only living goddesses. The selection process is almost identical to selecting the Dali Lama, except she's judged on divine female energy and revered as a supreme deity. She lives a life of seclusion, rarely speaks to the public and is always carried in someone’s arms. But not for long. This critical moment of growth from “deity” to “ordinary” spotlights the importance of girls’ education and aspiration; thereby increasing the value of women in society

Partnered with Dana & Francesco on Kumari Girls is Ashok Pahari. Ashok is the founder of Three mm Films in Kathmandu & Lalitpur, Nepal. Ashok and his production team have curated current and former Kumaris, caretakers, experts and historians to tell this incredible story of one of Nepal’s oldest traditions, the Kumari. Ashok is also a seasoned cinematographer along with his producing credits.
